How did you come up with the name “Communitas”?

The committee formed to develop this school made the conscious decision to work by consensus – each member contributing ideas that are then discussed until a decision is reached. As the committee talked about building a school from scratch, a lot of ideas gradually came together into a cohesive vision of education. During this process, committee members continued to think of names around these ideas – reflecting student-centered learning, exploration, community, wisdom and other key components of the project. On decision day, the name “Communitas” was put forward as an idea embodying a time in life when people come together in intense community at the threshold of a major change – in this case, adolescence on the verge of adulthood. Communitas is the intense feeling of togetherness, community spirit, social equality, and solidarity that arises at these times. In the final discussion around the school’s name, “Communitas” emerged through consensus as the choice.
